While The Others Sleep

Alfie can’t sleep. He’s been sent to a sanatorium to get better. And it’s a terrifying place. Especially at night… when everyone else is asleep. Alfie soon discovers that being awake is the most dangerous condition of all. You’ll find out why. But don’t expect to sleep afterwards…

While the others sleep is a scary book which is all set up for the basic horror theme – lunatic assylum, a crazy boy who can talk to spirits, creatures from the depths of hell and the unknown. Authough it may seem like the average book, a great plot twist at the end will make you question the main character’s (and your) existence for many sleepless nights to come.

Trying to get to the bottom of his insomnia whilst dealing with the other patients at scarbrook house, the drunkard dr Grenfell (a medical man more worried about his reputation than is patients) and creatures killing off his friends one by one in the night is bad enough without his father disowning him for his small medical condition without much reason. What has Alfie done to deserve this from his family?

I loved reading this book – it was a great page turner and it kept me on my toes. Long nights have been spent reading this book with the “I’ll just read one more page” excuse until I phisically couldn’t keep my eyes open! I would say that this book is not sutible for those under a minimum of 12 as it is, as I said, a very scary book. It is not for the faint hearted as there is lots of gore and suprises in it. This is, however, great for anyone who loves a scare or would like to try out reading horror as it is a basic plot until the end – this is the first proper horror book that I’ve read and I personally think that it’s the first in a long line of scary books that I will read in future. I give this book ***** because of the great twist and the general casual feeling of the style of writing. This is not a trashy book from a series with hundreds of books in it so don’t be fooled into thinking that every horror fiction is like that. I would highly recommend this book.
