The Thing About Jellyfish

The thing about jellyfish is about a 12 year old girl who has recently lost her best friend to drowning. However, she is not convinced that this was the cause of her death as she was a great swimmer. After visiting the aquarium on a school trip, she finds that Franny’s peril was down to a jellyfish.

This book touches on the subject of loss, mental health and family relationships. You could really empathise with the main character and by the end of the book, I felt like I knew her. It was also a page turner as I read it in two days! I couldn’t put it down once I’d started and loved the short chapters and truthfulness of the book.

I would recommend this to anyone who is aged 10-14 and would be great for fans of David Almond as it’s similar in style. I would lend this book to a friend who is not too keen on gory teen fiction but still wants a more adult style book to read. It would also be good for people who are going through a loss and are ccoming to terms with it.

Disclaimer: Pan Macmillan publishers did send me a proof copy of this book for free in exchange for a review. This has in no way changed my opinion of the book or any other Pan Macmillan books.
